Millet:  .

Millet are some of the oldest of cultivated crops. The term millet is applied to various grass crops whose seeds are harvested for food or feed. The five millet species of commercial importance are proso, foxtail, barnyard, browntop and pearl. Examples :- Jowar, bajra and ragi are the important millet grown in India.

Jowar - Jowar is also known as Sorghum. It is rich in Potassium, phosphorus and calcium with small amounts of irons and sodium. It is the third most important food crop with respect to area and production.

  • It is a rain fed crop mostly grown in the moist area which do not needs much irrigation.
  • Maharashta is the largest producer of jowar followed by Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh And Madhya Pradesh .
  • Bajra :- Bajra is also known as Pearl Millet. It Contains iron, Folate, Magnesium, Copper , Zinc Calcium And Vitamins.It is one of the oldest cultivated grains.

  • Bajra grows well on sandy soils and shallow black soils.
  • Rajasthan is the Largest producer of Bajra Followed By Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujrat and Haryana .
  • It is widely consumed in rural India and is available all over the World.
  • It's a rich source of a variety of nutrients and has a lot of health benefits.
  • It can also resist dry spells and droughts.
  • Bajra, popularly known as pearl millet, is a Poaceae plant with the botanical name Pennisetum glaucum or Pennisetum typhoideum (grass family).
  • Since the beginning of time, it has grown in Africa and the Indian subcontinent.
  • Ragi :- It is also known as Finger Millet. It is rich in iron, Calcium and Roughage ,

  • Ragi grows well in dry regions on red,black, sandy and shallow black soils.
  • Major produces of ragi are Karnataka, Tamil nadu, Himachal Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Sikkim etc. 
  • Main Feature of Millet :-

  • Though, these are known as coarse grains, they have very high nutritional value. For example, ragi is very rich in iron, calcium, other micro nutrients and roughage.
